Reports of Sickness Bug at the Flamingo Beach Resort Return

We have received reports from holiday makers that have returned from their stay at the Flamingo beach Resort in Lanzarote with sickness and diarrhoea.

The Flamingo Beach Resort is featured by Thomson as part of their winter programme. However, in summer it is featured by First Choice as one of their Holiday Villages. Both First Choice and Thomson Holidays are owned by Travel Agent, TUI UK Limited

The reports of illness come amid recent compensation pay-outs for people that contracted the swimming pool bug, Cryptosporidium which is typically associated water contaminated with human faeces.

Recent cases we have dealt with include:

  • One of our client’s from Glasgow was awarded £8,000 in compensation when her daughter was struck down with Cryptosporidium towards the end of her holiday. As a result of the illness the child was hospitalised and it meant that the family could not return to the UK as planned.
  • Another family were awarded £5,100 when their children had short lived episodes of sickness and diarrhoea, also believed to be caused by Cryptosporidium.

Those unlucky enough to have contracted an infection such as food poisoning or a water related infection cannot usually expect to develop the symptoms immediately after being infected by the germ. Cryptosporidium, for example, can take between 7 to 10 days before the symptoms commence after ingestion of the bug. Salmonella, associated with poorly prepared meat and poultry, will typically take 24 to 48 hours before the symptoms commence.

The time between ingesting the germ and the symptoms commencing may explain why the reports on Tripadvisor indicate that the symptoms started while holiday makers were on their way back home or having just returned to the UK.

To date, we have not received any positive confirmation of anyone that has tested positive for a bug. This should not stop people from seeking legal advice if their health has been put in jeopardy following their stay at the hotel.
