Yorkshire teenager, Peter Holmes, Suffers Head Injuries in Holiday Jet-Ski Accident

A 17-year-old British holidaymaker has suffered serious head injuries after an accident involving a jet ski while on holiday in Serbia.

Peter Holmes from Alwoodley in Leeds was holidaying with his parents Robert and Sofia Holmes, twin brother Alex and sister Vikki, 19, at Avala, near Belgrade when he was found unconscious and lying face down in the water after a crash involving another jet ski.

Peter and his sister were novice jet skiers but were accompanied by experienced staff from the Sava Jetski Club of Serbia. The rider accompanying Peter suffered leg injuries in the crash but was released after hospital treatment.

The riders of the other jet ski involved in the accident were uninjured.

The accident occurred on Sunday, 14 August and Peter was taken to hospital by ambulance, after his sister and others helped him out of the water and took him to shore by jet ski. A doctor treated him at the scene.

Vikki Holmes is a medical student at Manchester University but said that she did not witness the crash that injured her brother.

Peter was admitted to intensive care at the Clinical Centre of Serbia, Belgrade for treatment.

It was his first visit to Serbia, where his journalist father Robert Holmes, 59, had reported on the war in the former Yugoslavia for the Yorkshire Post in the 1990s. Mr Holmes also reported from The Hague on the trial of former Bosnian Serb politician Radovan Karadzic. The family had been staying with friends in a villa at Avala.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post after the accident, Mr Holmes said that his son was not “wild and reckless” but “brave and adventurous”. He said that Peter could not resist the opportunity to go jet skiing, as it had been a hot day and the water looked “tempting”.

He added that the prognosis for his son’s recovery was good.

“Doctors say he has a good chance of making a full recovery from his head injuries, but it is still early days and we are keen to get him home as soon as possible,” said Mr Holmes, whose family had taken out holiday insurance.

His son and daughter had gone out on the water after a jet-ski competition on the River Sava. Both were wearing life jackets but not protective helmets – it is reported that many other jet skiers on the river were also not wearing helmets.

Mr Holmes said that he had been reassured that Peter and his sister would be looked after on the jet skis.

“He is a keen sportsman but has no previous experience of jet skiing. We were assured by the jet-ski club that our children were in safe hands,” he said.

The British Embassy in Belgrade has been advised of the accident.
