Compensation for Campylobacter on Holiday


Holidaymakers travelling abroad may contract a range of illness’s that can ruin their holiday experience. Campylobacter is one of the infections that holidaymakers become ill with while they are abroad on a package holiday.

What are the Symptoms?

The illness is characterised by the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhoea - which is often bloody

Illness can strike within 2-5 days of exposure and the symptoms can last between a week and ten days.

If you have contracted the infection then it is likely that you will make a full recovery. It is important to keep hydrated for as long as any diarrhoea symptoms persist. Antibiotics may be administered in the more severe cases.

How is the infection caused?

The infection is normally contracted through either the incorrect handling of raw poultry and meat or the consumption of raw or improperly cooked poultry and meat whilst on holiday. Infection cases are usually single or multiple episodes at holiday hotels.

What to look out for

  • Is all poultry and meat cooked to the correct temperature before you eat it?
  • Are the hotel staff following good hand hygiene practices and ensuring their hands are clean?
  • Are kitchen utensils that have been used in the preparation of raw meat clean?
  • What does the water taste like? Do not drink dirty contaminated water.
